The AFE58JD28 is a highly integrated analog front-end (AFE) solution designed for ultrasound systems requiring high performance, low power consumption, and compact form factor.
The AFE58JD28 is an integrated AFE optimized for medical ultrasound applications. The device is implemented as a multi-chip module (MCM) with two dies: a voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA) die and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) die. The VCA die features 16 channels connected to the 16 channels of the ADC die.
Each channel in the VCA die can be configured in one of two modes: time gain compensation (TGC) mode and continuous wave (CW) mode. In TGC mode, each channel consists of a low-noise amplifier (LNA), a voltage-controlled attenuator (VCAT), a programmable gain amplifier (PGA), and a third-order low-pass filter (LPF). The LNA gain is programmable to 21dB, 18dB, or 15dB. The LNA also supports active termination. The VCAT supports an attenuation range of 0dB to 36dB with analog voltage control. The PGA offers gain options from 18dB to 27dB in 3dB steps. The LPF cutoff frequency can be set between 10MHz and 30MHz to support ultrasound applications at different frequencies. In CW mode, the LNA output is fed into a low-power passive mixer with 16 selectable phase delays, followed by a summing amplifier with a bandpass filter. Different phase delays can be applied to each analog input signal to perform on-chip beamforming. A harmonic filter in the CW mixer suppresses third- and fifth-order harmonics, enhancing sensitivity for CW Doppler measurements.
The 16 channels of the ADC die can be configured to operate at 14-bit or 12-bit resolution. ADC resolution can be traded off against conversion rate, supporting maximum speeds of 65MSPS at 14-bit and 80MSPS at 12-bit resolution. The ADC is designed to scale its power consumption with the sampling rate. The ADC output interface uses LVDS, enabling easy interfacing with low-cost FPGAs.
In addition, the AFE58JD28 includes a digital demodulator and a JESD204B data packing block. The digital in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) demodulator with a programmable decimation filter accelerates computationally intensive algorithms at low power. The device also supports an optional JESD204B interface at rates up to 5Gbps, further simplifying board routing in high channel-count systems.
The device supports a variety of power and noise configuration options to optimize system performance. As such, these devices are well-suited AFE solutions for ultrasound systems with stringent battery life requirements.
The device is available in a 15mm × 15mm NFBGA-289 package and is pin-compatible with the AFE5818 and AFE5816 families.
