The ISL8307XE is a single transceiver powered by 3.3V, compliant with RS-485 and RS-422 balanced communication standards. These devices draw extremely low bus current (+125kV - 100mA), enabling them to present a true "1/8 unit load" on the RS-485 bus. This allows up to 256 transceivers on a network without violating the RS-485 specification's 32 unit load maximum, eliminating the need for repeaters. For example, in remote utility meter reading systems where individual meter readings are routed to a concentrator via an RS-485 network, the high permissible node count minimizes the number of repeaters required. The receiver (Rx) input features a "fail-safe" design that ensures the Rx output remains logic high when the Rx input is open, shorted, or terminated but undriven. Hot-swap circuitry ensures that Tx and Rx outputs remain in a high-impedance state while the supply stabilizes. The ISL83070E through ISL83075E use slew-rate-limited drivers to reduce EMI and minimize reflections from improperly terminated transmission lines or unterminated stubs in multipoint applications. The slew-rate-limited versions also include receiver input filtering to enhance noise immunity in the presence of slow input signals. The ISL83070E, ISL83071E, ISL83073E, ISL83076E, and ISL83077E are configured for full-duplex (separate Rx input and Tx output pins) applications. The half-duplex versions multiplex the Rx input and Tx output to allow a transceiver with output disable functionality in an 8-pin package.
