Introduction
The LM3150 SIMPLE SWITCHER controller is an easy-to-use step-down power supply controller capable of delivering up to 12A output current in typical applications. Operating over an input voltage range of 6V to 42V, the LM3150 features an adjustable output voltage as low as 0.6V. Switching frequency is adjustable up to 1 MHz, and a synchronous topology enables higher-efficiency designs. The LM3150 controller incorporates patented Emulated Ripple Mode (ERM) control technology with a Constant On-Time (COT) architecture, allowing the use of low-ESR output capacitors to reduce overall solution size and output voltage ripple. The COT regulation architecture provides ultra-fast transient response and requires no external loop compensation, helping to minimize external component count and design complexity. Fault protection features — including thermal shutdown, undervoltage lockout, overvoltage protection, short-circuit protection, current limiting, and pre-biased output voltage startup — enable a robust and stable solution. The LM3150 SIMPLE SWITCHER solution achieves a complete easy-to-use design with minimal external components and National Semiconductor's WEBENCH online design tool. WEBENCH provides design support throughout every step of the design process, including external component calculation using the new MOSFET selector, electrical simulation, thermal simulation, and layout templates.
