Introduction
ATD5984 is a micro-stepping motor driver with an integrated translator, capable of driving bipolar stepper motors in full, half, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32 step modes. The step mode is selected via logic input pins MSx. The output drive capability reaches 28V ±1.6A.
The integrated translator is key to the ease of use of the ATD5984. A single pulse input on the STEP pin advances the motor one step, eliminating the need for a phase sequence table, high-frequency control lines, and complex programming interfaces. This makes it well-suited for applications where no complex microprocessor is available or where microprocessor resources are limited.
During stepping operation, the ATD5984's internal circuitry automatically controls PWM operation in fast, slow, and mixed decay modes. In mixed decay mode, the device initially operates in fast decay for a period of time before switching to slow decay until the fixed off-time period ends. Mixed decay mode control not only reduces motor noise during operation, but also improves step accuracy while reducing overall system power consumption.
Synchronous rectification control circuitry improves power dissipation during PWM operation. Internal protection features include: over-temperature protection with hysteresis, undervoltage lockout, and overcurrent protection.
The ATD5984 is available in a QFN24 package with an exposed thermal pad for improved thermal performance. It is a lead-free product compliant with environmental standards.
