Introduction
The bq24296M is a highly integrated switch-mode battery charging management and system power path management device designed for single-cell lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries in a variety of smartphone and tablet applications. Its low-impedance power path optimizes the efficiency of switch-mode operation, reduces battery charging time, and extends battery life during the discharge phase. An I²C serial interface for charging and system settings makes this device a truly flexible solution.
This device supports a 3.9V - 6.2V USB input power supply, including standard USB host ports and USB charging ports with 6.4V overvoltage protection. It complies with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 power specifications and features input current and voltage regulation. To set the default input current limit, the bq24296M obtains results from system detection circuits (such as USB PHY devices). The device also has a fast-start function and precise current-limiting capability up to 1.5A. It can provide an adjustable voltage of 4.55V - 5.5V (default 5V) for VBUS and supports USB On-the-Go operation.
Power path management regulates the system voltage to be slightly higher than the battery voltage but not lower than the minimum system voltage of 3.5V (programmable). Thanks to this feature, the system can remain operational even when the battery is completely depleted or removed. When the input source current or voltage limit is reached, power path management automatically reduces the charging current to zero and then starts discharging the battery until the system's power requirements are met. This charging mode operation ensures that the input source is not overloaded.
The device starts and completes a charging cycle when host control is unavailable. It automatically charges the battery in three stages: preconditioning, constant current, and constant voltage. At the end of the charging cycle, when the charging current falls below the preset limit in the constant-voltage stage, the charger automatically terminates. Subsequently, when the battery voltage drops below the recharge threshold, the charger will automatically initiate another charging cycle.
This charging device provides various safety features for battery charging and system operation, including negative temperature coefficient thermistor monitoring, charging safety timer, and overvoltage/overcurrent protection.
