Introduction
HR4988 is a microstepping motor driver with an integrated translator, capable of operating bipolar stepper motors in full, half, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 step modes. The step mode is selected via logic input pins MSx. Its output drive capability reaches 32V and ±2A.
The translator is the key to the ease of use of the HR4988. A single pulse input on the STEP pin advances the motor one step, eliminating the need for phase sequence tables, high-frequency control lines, and complex programming interfaces — making it well suited for applications where a sophisticated microprocessor is unavailable or the microprocessor is heavily loaded.
During stepping operation, the HR4988's internal circuitry automatically controls its PWM operation in fast, slow, and mixed decay modes. In mixed decay mode, the device initially operates in fast decay for a period of time before switching to slow decay until the fixed decay period expires. Mixed decay mode control not only reduces motor noise during operation, but also improves step accuracy while reducing system power consumption.
An internal synchronous rectification control circuit improves power dissipation during PWM operation. Internal protection features include: thermal shutdown with hysteresis, undervoltage lockout, and overcurrent protection. No special power-up sequencing is required.
The HR4988 is available in a QFN28 package with an exposed pad for improved thermal dissipation. It is a lead-free product compliant with environmental standards.
