An Overview of Resistors
Imagine turning the tap, the more angle manually is twisted, the more water will flow out. Vise-versa. This is how the resistor, the "Tap", works essentially; It works, as a block/wall, to limit the flow of the current. The resistor value is adjustable, yet there exist fixed-value resistors in the industry for specific usage.
What are the Main Materials of Resistors and their Properties?
The main materials that resistors have and their properties are summarized below.
Wirewound: Often used for power resistors, since the power per volume ratio is highest. These usually have the properties of the lowest noise, temperature
stability, and robustness. Its resistance values range from 0.1 up to 100 kΩ, with accuracies between 0.1% and 20%.
Carbon Composition: used in certain applications such as power supplies and welding control. It is made out of a mixture of fine carbon particles and a non-conductive ceramic material. It was a reliable resistor generally used until the 1960s when other resistors took over the market. Its resistor value depends on its body dimension and the ratio of carbon and ceramic material.
Carbon Film: Easy to produce but usually have more noise due to its properties of the material. Its resistive value ranges from 1Ω up to10MΩ and has a better accuracy compared to carbon composition resistors.
Metal Film: The attributes of thermal and voltage noise are between carbon and wirewound resistors. The tolerances of metal film are between 0.5% and 2% with a temperature coefficient of 50 ppm/K and 100 ppm/K in between. Stability is lower than for the Wirewound resistor, but it has a better frequency.
Metal Oxide Film: Similar to metal film resistors with the difference of material. The material is a metal oxide, such as tin oxide. These durable resistors are better in reliability and stability than metal film types. Additionally, the temperature is higher in operating conditions, making them used more in applications that require a high endurance.
Ceramic: Useful for high frequency applications. The ceramic resistor is widely used and its properties of High-Temperature Resistance, Stability, Durability, Heat Dissipation, resistance to Oxidation, and wide application Spectrum, make it tough and versatile in the electronic industry.
Foil: The foil resistors invented in the 1960s are still the most accurate and stable type today. By adopting the mechanical design, the foil resistor benefits from its design and has a very low-temperature coefficient of resistance. They are used for applications with high precision requirements.
