Introduction
The MAX481, MAX483, MAX485, MAX487–MAX491, and MAX1487 are low-power transceivers for RS-485 and RS422 communication. Each part contains one driver and one receiver. The MAX483, MAX487, MAX488, and MAX489 feature reduced slew-rate drivers that minimize EMI and reduce reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, thus allowing error-free data transmission up to 250kbps. The driver slew rates of the MAX481, MAX485, MAX490, MAX491, and MAX1487 are not limited, allowing them to transmit up to 2.5Mbps. These transceivers draw between 120μA and 500μA of supply current when unloaded or fully loaded with disabled drivers. Additionally, the MAX481, MAX483, and MAX487 have a low-current shutdown mode in which they consume only 0.1μA. All parts operate from a single 5V supply. Drivers are short-circuit current limited and are protected against excessive power dissipation by thermal shutdown circuitry that places the driver outputs into a high-impedance state. The receiver input has a fail-safe feature that guarantees a logic-high output if the input is open circuit. The MAX487 and MAX1487 feature quarter-unit-load receiver input impedance, allowing up to 128 MAX487/ MAX1487 transceivers on the bus. Full-duplex communications are obtained using the MAX488–MAX491, while the MAX481, MAX483, MAX485, MAX487, and MAX1487 are designed for half-duplex applications.

Product FAQ
- 1. What primary supply voltage levels, maximum baud rates, and bus transceiver topology define the MAX485ESA+T?The MAX485ESA+T is a high-speed, half-duplex RS-485/RS-422 transceiver designed to operate from a single +5V DC power supply (4.75V to 5.25V). It supports differential data transmission at rates up to 2.5Mbps. With its standard 1-unit-load receiver input, it allows up to 32 transceivers to share the same RS-485 bus.
- 2. Which package type and part number suffixes identify the MAX485ESA+T?In the MAX485ESA+T part number, "E" designates the -40°C to +85°C extended operating temperature range, while "SA" identifies the 8-pin SO (Small Outline) package. According to the datasheet package information, the "+", "#", or "-" in the package code indicates RoHS status. The device is available in an 8-pin SO surface-mount package suitable for PCB assembly.
- 3. How do the driver enable and receiver enable control pins operate in the MAX485ESA+T?The MAX485ESA+T includes a Driver Enable (DE) pin and an active-low Receiver Enable (RE) pin for controlling transmitter and receiver operation. When the driver is disabled (DE = Low), its outputs enter a high-impedance state. When the receiver is disabled (RE = High), the receiver output also becomes high impedance. The device typically draws 300µA of supply current, with a maximum of 500µA, under the specified operating conditions.
- 4. What operating temperature range and protection features does the MAX485ESA+T provide? The MAX485ESA+T is specified for operation over an extended temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. Its driver incorporates short-circuit current limiting and thermal shutdown protection to help prevent damage during fault conditions. The receiver inputs are specified to operate over a common-mode voltage range of -7V to +12V, meeting the requirements of standard RS-485 communication.
- 5. What package option is available for the MAX485ESA+T?The MAX485ESA+T is supplied in an 8-pin SO (Small Outline) surface-mount package and is specified for operation over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. Additional package outline information and land patterns are provided in the datasheet package information section.
