Introduction
Polymer fuses are made of conductive plastic formed into thin sheets with electrodes attached on both sides. The conductive plastic consists of a non-conductive crystalline polymer and highly conductive carbon black. The electrodes ensure uniform current distribution and provide surfaces for lead connections or custom mounting. The conductive plastic material exhibits a highly nonlinear positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect when heated, making it suitable for resettable overcurrent protection devices. At normal room temperature, numerous carbon chains within the material form conductive paths. Under fault conditions, excessive current causes the material temperature to rise; once it exceeds the phase transition temperature, the material transitions from a crystalline to an amorphous state, resulting in a sharp increase in resistance. As long as power is applied, the material remains in a high-resistance state until the fault is cleared and power is removed, at which point the material reverts to its crystalline state and resistance rapidly returns to its original value.
