Introduction
The 6599 is a precision dual-end controller for resonant half-bridge topology circuits. It provides a 50% duty cycle with both high-side and low-side outputs 180° out of phase. Output voltage regulation is achieved by adjusting the operating frequency. A fixed dead time between the turn-on and turn-off of the two switching devices ensures soft switching and reliable operation at high frequencies. The high-side switch is driven using a bootstrap method, with a fast-recovery bootstrap diode integrated on-chip. The operating frequency range of the IC is adjustable via external components. To prevent inrush current, the switching frequency starts from a preset maximum and then gradually decreases to a steady-state value determined by the control loop. This nonlinear frequency variation minimizes output voltage overshoot; the startup sequence is also programmable. Under light-load conditions, the IC can be forced into burst mode operation to minimize power consumption. IC features include a non-latching low-side disable input for overcurrent protection, with frequency shifting and delayed shutdown followed by automatic restart. When the first-level protection is insufficient, a higher-level overcurrent protection latches the IC to control the primary current. These combined features provide complete overload and short-circuit protection. In addition, a latching shutdown input (DIS) enables easy implementation of over-temperature or overvoltage protection. A PFC controller interface allows the PFC to be turned off during overcurrent shutdown, when the DIS pin is high, or when operating in burst mode.
