Introduction
KEMET's Floating Electrode Flexible Termination Capacitors (FF-CAP) combine two of KEMET's existing technologies — floating electrode and flexible termination. The floating electrode component uses a cascaded internal electrode design to form multiple series capacitors within a single monolithic structure. This unique configuration improves voltage and ESD performance over standard capacitor designs and allows open-circuit failure mode in the event of mechanical damage (cracking). The flexible termination component uses a conductive silver epoxy between the base metal and nickel barrier layers of KEMET's standard termination system to provide flexibility while maintaining terminal strength, solderability, and electrical performance. Both technologies address the primary failure mode of MLCCs — flex cracking — which is typically caused by excessive tensile and shear stresses generated during board flexure and thermal cycling. While neither technology eliminates the possibility of mechanical damage under extreme environmental and/or operating conditions, the combination of the two provides the ultimate level of protection against low insulation resistance or short-circuit conditions. FF-CAP complements KEMET's open-mode, floating electrode (FE-CAP), flexible termination (FT-CAP), and KEMET Power Solutions (KPS) product lines by offering an ultimate fail-safe design optimized for low-to-mid capacitance values. These devices exhibit predictable capacitance variation over time and voltage, with minimal capacitance change relative to ambient temperature. Over the temperature range of -55°C to +125°C, capacitance change is limited to ±15%. In addition to commercial-grade products, automotive-grade devices qualified to the rigorous AEC-Q200 requirements of the Automotive Electronics Council are also available.
