Introduction
KEMET's ultra-stable X8R dielectric Flexible Termination (FT-CAP) MLCCs feature a unique flexible termination system integrated with KEMET's standard termination materials. Conductive silver epoxy is used between the base metal and nickel barrier layers of KEMET's standard termination system to achieve flexibility while maintaining termination strength, solderability, and electrical performance. This technology is designed to address the primary failure mode of MLCCs — flex cracking — which is typically caused by excessive tensile and shear stresses generated during board flexure and thermal cycling. The flexible termination technology suppresses the transfer of board stress to the rigid ceramic body, thereby reducing flex cracks that can lead to low insulation resistance or short-circuit failures.
Combined with the stability of KEMET's ultra-stable high-temperature dielectric technology, these flex-resistant devices are RoHS-compliant, offer up to 5mm flex capability, and support a maximum operating temperature of 150°C. The ultra-stable X8R dielectric delivers the same temperature performance as conventional X8R, but without capacitance loss due to applied DC voltage. These devices exhibit no capacitance change with voltage and minimal capacitance variation with ambient temperature. They also serve as drop-in replacements for high-capacitance, large-footprint devices that cannot provide capacitance stability. From -55°C to +150°C, capacitance change with temperature is limited to ±15%.
While this technology cannot eliminate mechanical damage that may occur under extreme environmental and operating conditions, it provides superior flex performance compared to standard termination systems. FT-CAP complements KEMET's open-mode, Floating Electrode (FE-CAP), Floating Electrode with Flexible Termination (FF-CAP), and KEMET Power Solutions offerings.
In addition to commercial-grade products, automotive-grade devices are available that meet the stringent AEC-Q200 qualification requirements of the Automotive Electronics Council.
