Introduction
The LM2576 series step-down voltage regulators are monolithic integrated circuits that provide all the functions of a step-down (buck) switching regulator, capable of driving a 3A load with excellent line and load regulation. These devices are available with fixed output voltages of 3.3V, 5V, 12V, 15V, as well as an adjustable output version. These regulators include internal frequency compensation and a fixed-frequency oscillator, minimizing external component count for ease of use. The LM2576 offers significantly higher efficiency than conventional three-terminal linear regulators, making it an ideal replacement that typically requires no heat sink or only a very small one. A series of standard inductors optimized for use with the LM2576 is available from inductor suppliers, a feature that greatly simplifies switching power supply design. Additional features include a guaranteed ±4% tolerance on output voltage under specified input voltage and load conditions, and ±12% tolerance on oscillator frequency. An external shutdown circuit is also included, with a typical standby current of 50μA. The output switch incorporates cycle-by-cycle current limiting and a thermal shutdown function for full protection under fault conditions.
