Introduction
NBM5100A/B is a battery energy management device designed to maximize the available capacity of non-rechargeable primary batteries in low-voltage, low-power applications requiring burst current loads. The device overcomes the voltage drop and battery life limitations encountered when extracting high pulse currents from lithium primary batteries — such as 3.6V lithium thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl₂) cells — commonly used in wireless, low-power IoT sensor applications. The NBM5100A/B incorporates two-stage high-efficiency DC-DC conversion and a proprietary intelligent learning algorithm. The first-stage DC-DC conversion transfers energy from the lithium battery to a capacitive storage element at a low, constant current. Once charging is complete, the second-stage DC-DC conversion cycle utilizes the stored energy to deliver a regulated voltage with high pulse load current capability at the VDH output pin. The battery is never subjected to large load pulse currents directly, thereby extending battery life and improving its predictability. The proprietary learning algorithm monitors energy usage across repetitive load pulse cycles and optimizes the first-stage DC-DC conversion to minimize residual charge in the storage capacitor. A serial interface allows a microcontroller to modify default configuration settings and read system information.
