Introduction
The TPS650830 is a single-chip power management IC solution designed for the latest Intel processors, primarily targeting tablets, ultrabooks, and notebooks powered by 2-cell, 3-cell, or 4-cell series-connected lithium-ion battery packs using NVDC or non-NVDC power architectures. The TPS650830 is used in Volume systems that employ consolidated low-voltage rails to achieve the smallest and most cost-effective system power solution. The TPS650830 provides a complete power solution based on Intel reference designs. The device features five high-efficiency buck VRs and one sink/source LDO, working in conjunction with power sequencing logic devices to manage external load switches, thereby delivering the correct power rails, sequencing, and protection — including DDR3 and DDR4 memory power supplies. The VR supports dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) to maximize efficiency, including connected standby functionality. High-frequency VRs use small inductors and capacitors to minimize solution size. Output power can be regulated via four VR controllers. The I2C interface enables easy control through an embedded controller (EC). Each device version is available in both 7x7 NFBGA and 9x9 NFBGA packages. The 7x7 NFBGA package is suited for Type 4 PCBs to achieve the minimum board area. The 9x9 NFBGA package is compatible with Type 3 and Type 4 PCBs to minimize cost and reduce board area.
Features
- 5 reconfigurable regulators: maintain high efficiency across wide input voltage and output current ranges; voltage, current, and sequencing are adjustable for system optimization
- 4 variable output voltage buck controllers with external power MOSFETs: VR1 = 1V; VR3 = 3.3V, VR4 = 1.2V/1.35V/1.1V (for DDRx VDDQ), VR5 = 5V; VIN range: 5.4V to 24V; with external power MOSFETs, continuous output current range from <1A to >10A
- 1 variable output voltage buck converter with internal power MOSFET: VR2 = 1.8V; VIN range: 3V to 3.6V; up to 2A continuous output current; output voltage DC accuracy ±1%; DC + AC accuracy ±5% with differential output voltage sensing; typical quiescent current of 30μA per controller or converter in ultra-low quiescent current mode
- 3 fixed output voltage LDOs:
- LDO1: 1/2 VR4 fixed output voltage LDO (for DDRx VTT) (Vout = VDDQ/2); up to 1A continuous output current, DC + AC accuracy ±5%, peak current 2A
- LDO3: 3.3V fixed output voltage LDO, DC accuracy ±1%, current <40mA; high-accuracy reference supply for external ADC; 3.3V load switch for EC_VCC power rail
- LDO5: 5V fixed output voltage LDO, DC accuracy ±1%, current <100mA; supply for controller and converter gate drive, auto-switchable to 5V regulator for high efficiency
- 8 power-good comparators and sequencing logic for external regulators, load switches, or LDOs; supports power button logic with programmable response time
- 2 general-purpose level translators
- Backup battery/3.1V LDO selector output for RTC domain
- Power detection and monitoring: adapter, battery 1, and battery 2
- Over-temperature protection comparator for stacked PTC thermistors or a single NTC thermistor
- 1Hz EC wake clock output
- Advanced system reset control
