Introduction
The Vinco Touch Keys Shield is designed to interface with the FTDI Vinco USB development module, demonstrating how the VNC2 device enables Open Accessory Mode in compatible Android devices and performs data transfer with Android devices via USB to implement touch keyboard operation. The Vinco Touch Keys is a shield that mates with the FTDI Vinco development module to enable touchpad operation. The shield incorporates an STMPE821 device, which is an 8-channel GPIO capacitive touch key sensor. The sensor communicates with the Vinculum-II (VNC2) on the Vinco module via the I²C protocol. Vinco is a development module inspired by the Arduino concept, using the Vinculum-II (VNC2) dual-port USB host/device IC. Vinco uses the VNC2-64Q package, providing 38 GPIO options on 0.1-inch pitch sockets. Vinco is designed as a prototyping platform for VNC2-based designs and applications. A software library for I²C is available through the free VNC2 IDE. VNC2 is the second device in the FTDI Vinculum series of embedded dual USB host controller devices. VNC2 devices provide USB host interface functionality for a variety of different USB device classes, including support for BOMS (Bulk Only Mass Storage), printers, and HID. For mass storage devices such as USB flash drives, VNC2 transparently handles FAT file structures. Communication with non-USB devices, such as low-cost microcontrollers, can be accomplished via UART, SPI, or parallel FIFO interfaces. VNC2 provides a new, cost-effective solution for adding USB host functionality to products that previously lacked available hardware resources. VNC2 allows customers to develop their own firmware using the Vinculum II Software Development Toolkit. These development tools provide compiler, assembler, linker, and debugger tools within an integrated development environment (IDE).
