Introduction
Littelfuse's TMOV and iTMOV thermally protected varistors represent new developments in the field of integrated circuit protection. Both versions consist of radial-leaded metal oxide varistors (MOVs) with an integrated thermally activated element that disconnects in case of overheating caused by abnormal overvoltage or limited current conditions specified in UL1449. The integrated thermal element of TMOV and iTMOV varistors, combined with an appropriate housing design, helps SPD modules comply with UL1449 standards for plug-connected and permanently connected applications. The TMOV and iTMOV varistors offer fast thermal response due to the close proximity of the integrated thermal element to the MOV body. This integrated configuration also has lower inductance than most discrete solutions, thus improving the clamping performance against fast overvoltage transients. The iTMOV varistor differs from the TMOV varistor in that it includes a third pin to indicate that the MOV has been disconnected from the circuit. This pin facilitates connection to a monitoring circuit. Additionally, the TMOV and iTMOV varistors can be wave-soldered, which simplifies the assembly of the final product by reducing the cost of manual soldering operations and rework.
