Operating temperature should be taken into account when selecting a fuse current rating. The thermal derating curve for surface-mount fuses is shown in Figure 4, which can be used to determine the derating percentage based on operating temperature.

Fuse selection may appear straightforward — simply choose a fuse with a current rating slightly above the worst-case operating current of the system. In practice, however, this is not the case; derating factors for operating current and application temperature must also be considered. System startup and other operations — such as changes in processor speed or motor starting — can cause current surges or spikes, which must also be accounted for when selecting a fuse. Therefore, choosing the right fuse for an application is not as simple as knowing the system's nominal current alone.

Pulse-tolerant chip fuses feature high surge current withstand capability, providing overcurrent protection for DC power systems. Silver fuse elements combined with monolithic and multilayer designs deliver robust arc-quenching characteristics.
