Introduction
The CryptoCompanion™ Chip is designed as the mate to Atmel’s CryptoRF and CryptoMemory chips. It makes extensive use of the SHA - 1 hash algorithm. It stores secrets in an obscured way in nonvolatile memory and contains all the circuitry necessary to perform the authentication, password and encryption/decryption functions specified in the CRF datasheet. The general cryptographic strategy involves combining common secrets with ID and other values to compute a matching value. It includes a general - purpose cryptographic quality random number generator for mutual authentication.
Benefits include keeping core secrets confidential, flexible system implementation, multiple manufacturer setup options, hardware encryption engines, full hardware security implementation, protection of global secrets using SHA - 1, robust random number generation, secure EEPROM storage, potential reduction in total BOM, and being easy to use with little programming required.
