Introduction
The IS31FL3731 lets you revisit the classic LED matrix look with some great upgrades! This I2C LED driver IC provides individual PWM control of each LED in a 16×9 grid, enabling beautiful LED lighting effects without extensive pin manipulation. Simply tell the chip which LED on the grid you want to illuminate and at what brightness — it handles the rest. The IS31FL3731 is a capable little chip that operates on 2.7–5.5V power and logic, making it flexible for use with any microcontroller. You can configure the address so that up to 4 matrices can share a single I2C bus. The chip contains enough internal RAM for 8 independent display memory frames, allowing you to set up multiple animation frames and switch between them with a single command. This chip is ideal for building small LED displays — we've even designed adapter boards to match our ready-made red, yellow, green, blue, and white LED grids. Simply sandwich the driver board and matrix adapter board together and solder for a compact setup. Alternatively, you can build your own by following the LED grid schematic in the IS31FL3731 datasheet. To get you up and running quickly, we've designed a custom PCB in the STEMMA QT form factor for easy interfacing. The STEMMA QT connector is compatible with the SparkFun Qwiic I2C connector, enabling solderless connections between your development board and the IS31FL3731, or daisy-chaining it with various other sensors and accessories using compatible cables. The IS31 is compatible with 3–5V power and logic, making it suitable for use with virtually any microcontroller or single-board computer. Note that no LEDs are included with this product — you can purchase a matching LED matrix from us or build your own. Pick up a driver board and the LED color of your choice to pair them together. Some basic soldering is required to connect the driver backpack and matrix, and to wire up your microcontroller, but it's straightforward. Then install our Arduino or CircuitPython library and get some LEDs blinking right away. Our library is compatible with Adafruit_GFX, so if you need more graphics control, you can draw lines, circles, text, and small bitmaps. The board comes in two versions — the STEMMA QT version shown above and the original pin-header-only version shown below. Both versions run the same code.
