Introduction
MCP22350 is a highly integrated, small form factor USB Type-C Power Delivery port controller designed in compliance with the USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification and the USB Power Delivery 3.1 Specification. The device provides cable insertion orientation detection for USB Type-C receptacles and enables base-level communication with paired USB Type-C devices through an integrated USB Power Delivery 3.1 Media Access Controller. The MCP22350 is designed to serve as a companion Power Delivery controller for an external microcontroller or System-on-Chip, communicating via an integrated SPI interface. The device supports control of Power Delivery current and voltage using an external power supply. The MCP22350 integrates many of the analog discrete components required for USB Type-C Power Delivery applications, including two VCONN FETs with Rp/Rd switching capability, a power switch, and current and voltage sensing circuits for overvoltage/overcurrent detection. By integrating these components, the MCP22350 provides a low-cost, low-power, small form factor solution for consumer electronics and industrial applications. To effectively support battery-depleted use cases, the device integrates a power switch that selects between two external 3.3V power supplies, enabling plug detection and system wake-up without external processor intervention. The MCP22350 supports Alternate Mode negotiation over USB Type-C connectors using the Power Delivery 3.1 protocol, enabling DisplayPort operation and other major protocols over USB Type-C connectors.
