Gas discharge tubes normally remain in a high-insulation-resistance state, essentially equivalent to an open circuit, with virtually no effect on normal circuit operation. When a transient overvoltage occurs in the circuit and its amplitude exceeds the breakdown voltage within the gas discharge tube, the gas inside is ionized, causing the tube to conduct rapidly and clamp the overvoltage to a lower level, thereby protecting parallel-connected electronic equipment or circuit components from damage due to high-voltage surges. Once the overvoltage subsides, the gas discharge tube immediately returns to its high-insulation-resistance state and normal circuit operation resumes. The 2RL-8TH is a compact, ultra-thin radial-lead gas discharge tube manufactured using advanced processes and finished with a surface epoxy coating for superior performance. The epoxy coating provides excellent electrical insulation, mechanical protection, and moisture resistance, making it suitable for harsh environments. The radial-lead construction facilitates easy mounting and connection on PCBs and other equipment, offering distinct advantages over axial-lead configurations in certain PCB layouts. The ultra-thin profile meets the demands of space-constrained applications such as compact electronic devices. The low residual voltage design effectively limits the clamping voltage level following an overvoltage event, reducing the risk of damage to downstream circuit components.
