Introduction
The Sabertooth 2x10 motor driver has a nominal input voltage of 6–24V and an absolute maximum voltage of 30V. Continuous output current reaches 10A per channel, with peak loads up to 15A per channel for several seconds. These ratings apply at input voltages up to 18V, in still air with no additional heatsinking. When operated between 18V and 24V, power dissipation linearly reduces the continuous current rating to 8A per channel. Recommended power sources include 5 to 18 NiMH or NiCd cells, 2s to 6s Li-ion or LiPo batteries — the driver features a lithium battery mode to prevent damage from over-discharging lithium packs — 6V to 24V lead-acid batteries, and 6V to 24V power supplies (when used in parallel with a suitable battery). It offers mixed and independent mode options: mixed mode is designed for differential-drive robots, while independent mode suits applications controlling two motors not necessarily used in a differential-drive configuration. Synchronous regenerative drive returns energy to the battery during deceleration or motor reversal, improving runtime in systems with frequent stops or reversals; it also returns inductive energy from motor windings to the battery rather than dissipating it as heat, making partial-throttle operation more efficient. The switching frequency is 32kHz, above the upper limit of human hearing, so there is no annoying noise during motor operation. Thermal and overcurrent protection is provided via dual temperature sensors and overcurrent sensing to prevent damage from overheating, overloading, and short circuits. Screw terminal connections make installation and setup straightforward; operating modes and options are configured via DIP switches — no soldering required. The SMT construction keeps the unit compact and lightweight. Direct switching from full-speed forward to full-speed reverse is supported, with braking and acceleration proportional to the reversal command. Analog, R/C, and serial input modes along with multiple operating options make it suitable for projects of varying complexity.
