Introduction
ISL3159 is a ±15kV ESD-protected, 5V supply, single transceiver meeting both RS-485 and RS-422 balanced communication standards. It also features the enhanced output voltage and higher data rates required for high-speed PROFIBUS applications, suitable for industrial and extended industrial (-40°C to +125°C) temperature ranges. This allows up to 160 transceivers on a network without violating the load limit specifications of RS-485 and without the need for repeaters. The transceiver requires a 5V ±10% tolerance supply and delivers a minimum differential output voltage of 2.1V across this supply range. This means improved noise immunity (data integrity) and longer reach distances. SCSI applications benefit from the ISL3159E's low receiver and transmitter part-to-part skew. The ISL3159E is ideal for high-speed parallel applications requiring simultaneous capture of large numbers of bits. Low bit-to-bit skew relaxes timing constraints on data latch signals. The receiver (Rx) input features a "fail-safe" design that ensures a logic-high output when the Rx input is floating, shorted, or connected to ground but undriven. The high drive levels facilitate easy design of optically isolated interfaces. Hot-swap circuitry ensures that Tx and Rx outputs remain in a high-impedance state while the supply is stabilizing. The driver (Tx) output is short-circuit protected, even when the voltage exceeds the supply voltage. In addition, an on-chip thermal shutdown circuit can disable the Tx output to prevent damage from excessive power dissipation.
