Introduction
KEMET's X7R dielectric Floating Electrode (FE-CAP) multilayer ceramic capacitors feature a cascaded internal electrode design that forms multiple series-connected capacitors within a single monolithic structure. This unique configuration delivers enhanced voltage and ESD performance compared to standard capacitor designs, and exhibits open-circuit failure mode upon mechanical damage (cracking). If damaged, the device capacitance may decrease, but a short circuit is unlikely to occur. The FE-CAP is designed to reduce the probability of low insulation resistance or short-circuit conditions, as well as catastrophic and potentially costly failure events.
Driven by the demand for more robust and reliable components, the FE-CAP is engineered for critical applications where elevated operating temperatures and mechanical stress are concerns. These capacitors are manufactured in advanced facilities certified to ISO/TS 16949:2009 and are widely used in power supply (input and output filtering) and general electronics applications.
Combined with the stability of X7R dielectric, the FE-CAP complements KEMET's "open-mode" devices by offering a fail-safe design optimized for mid-to-low capacitance values. The capacitance of these devices changes predictably over time and with voltage, with minimal variation relative to ambient temperature. Over the -55°C to +125°C range, capacitance variation is limited to ±15%.
In addition to commercial-grade products, automotive-grade versions are available that meet the stringent qualification requirements of AEC-Q200.
