Introduction
KEMET's ArcShield high-voltage surface-mount X7R dielectric capacitors are designed for high-voltage applications prone to surface flashover (arc discharge).
Surface flashover is caused by high voltage gradients between the two termination faces within the ceramic body, or between one termination face and the opposing internal electrode structure. This phenomenon most commonly occurs when the applied voltage reaches or exceeds 300 V, in high-humidity environments, and in chip sizes with minimal spacing (creepage distance) between terminations. It can damage surrounding components or cause dielectric breakdown, ultimately resulting in a short circuit (catastrophic failure mode).
The patented ArcShield technology employs KEMET's highly reliable base metal dielectric system combined with a unique internal shielding electrode structure, designed to suppress arc discharge events while increasing available capacitance. This internal system is developed based on a partial Faraday cage principle, delivering unmatched performance and reliability compared to external surface coating technologies.
To enhance reliability, KEMET's flexible termination technology is an optional solution offering superior flex crack resistance compared to standard termination systems. It is designed to address flex cracking — the primary failure mode of MLCCs — typically caused by excessive tensile and shear stresses during board flexing and thermal cycling. The flexible termination technology suppresses the transfer of board stress to the rigid MLCC body, reducing flex cracks that can lead to low insulation resistance or short circuit failures.
KEMET's ArcShield high-voltage surface-mount MLCCs are available in automotive-grade versions, which are subject to more stringent testing protocols and inspection standards. Whether under the hood or in-cabin, these devices are suitable for mission-critical and safety-critical automotive circuits, or applications requiring reliable performance in harsh environments. Automotive-grade devices comply with the AEC-Q200 qualification requirements of the Automotive Electronics Council.
