The ISL9538B is a buck-boost narrow output voltage DC charger. It provides narrow output voltage DC charging, system bus regulation, and protection for tablets, ultrabooks, laptops, power banks, and any USB-C platform. The technology delivers high light-load efficiency and fast transient response. In charging mode, the ISL9538B accepts input power from a wide-range DC source and safely charges a Li-ion battery pack of up to 4 cells in series. As a narrow output voltage DC topology charger, the ISL9538B also regulates the system output to a narrow DC range to provide a stable system bus voltage. System power can be supplied by the adapter, battery, or a combination of both. The ISL9538B can operate with battery only, adapter only, or both connected simultaneously. For systems complying with specific specifications, the ISL9538B includes a system power monitoring function that provides an analog signal representing the total platform power consumption. This output can be connected to various core voltage regulators to provide specification-compliant functionality. The ISL9538B supports buck, boost, or buck-boost operation from 2 to 4 cells to the input. The ISL9538B provides SMBus serial communication, allowing many critical parameters to be programmed for customized solutions.
