Introduction
The Excelitas Technologies LLAM series silicon and InGaAs APD receiver modules integrate an APD, TEC, and hybrid circuit in a hermetically sealed, modified 12-pin TO-66 flange package with enhanced heat dissipation. The TEC reduces the burden of APD bias control, ensuring constant responsivity over an ambient temperature range of 5°C to 40°C.
LLAM series modules are specifically designed for detecting high-speed, low-light analog signals. The Si APDs used in these devices are identical to those in Excelitas' C30902EH and C30954EH products, while InGaAs APDs are used in the C30645EH and C30662EH products. These detectors offer good responsivity between 830 and 1550 nm, with very fast rise and fall times at all wavelengths. As with the C30659 series, the LLAM module's preamplifier section uses an ultra-low-noise GaAs FET front end, designed to operate at higher transimpedance than Excelitas' standard C30950 series.
LLAM features an inverting amplifier design using an emitter follower as the output buffer stage. For broadband performance, the output of these devices should be capacitively or AC-coupled to a 50 Ω termination. The module must not be DC-coupled to loads less than 2 kΩ. For field use, a temperature-compensated high-voltage power supply is recommended to maintain constant responsivity across varying temperatures.
Excelitas' InGaAs LLAM-1060E and -1550E preamplifier modules are designed with higher damage thresholds, providing greater tolerance when exposed to high optical power densities.
LLAM series modules are available as standard RoHS-compliant commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products. Excelitas also offers custom modules tailored to specific requirements, with modifications including bandwidth and gain optimization, use of alternative APDs, and FC connector packaging.
