The LM140K monolithic 3-terminal positive voltage regulators feature internal current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe-area compensation, making them essentially indestructible. With adequate heatsinking, they can deliver output currents exceeding 1.0A. They are used as fixed-voltage regulators in a wide range of applications, including local (on-card) regulation designed to eliminate noise and distribution problems associated with single-point regulation. In addition to use as fixed-voltage regulators, these devices can be used with external components to obtain adjustable output voltages and currents. Considerable effort was made to make the entire regulator family easy to use and to minimize the number of external components. Although this does improve transient response, output bypassing is not necessary. Input bypassing is required only when the regulator is located far from the power supply filter capacitor. The LM140K is available in a steel TO-3 power package with 5V, 12V, and 15V options.
