Introduction
The DIODES PI4IOE5V6524 is a 24-bit general-purpose I/O expander that provides remote I/O expansion for most microcontroller families via the I²C bus interface. When additional I/O is required, it offers a simple solution while minimizing interconnects — for example, connecting sensors, buttons, and keypads in battery-powered mobile applications. It can operate at 1.65V to 5.5V on the GPIO side and 0.8V to 3.6V on the SDA/SCL side. This enables interfacing with next-generation microprocessors and microcontrollers on the SDA/SCL side, where supply voltages are being reduced to save power. At power-up, the I/O ports are configured as inputs; however, the system master controller can enable the I/O ports as inputs or outputs by writing to the I/O direction bits. The data for each input or output is held in the corresponding input or output register. The system master controller can read all registers. The device features an open-drain interrupt output pin that asserts low when the input state of any GPIO port changes relative to the default value in the input state register. The device also provides an interrupt masking function, allowing users to mask interrupts from individual GPIO ports.
Features
- I²C bus-side operating supply voltage range: 0.8V to 3.6V
- Bidirectional voltage level translation and general-purpose I/O expansion between 0.8V to 3.6V SCL/SDA and 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, 5.5V ports
- Low standby current: typical 2μA at 3.3V VDD(P)
- 5.5V-tolerant I/O ports and 3.6V-tolerant I²C bus pins
- 1MHz Fast-mode Plus I²C bus interface
- Compatible with I²C bus Fast-mode Plus, Fast-mode, and Standard-mode
- Output port configuration: selectable group or individual pin push-pull or open-drain output stage
- Interrupt status: read-only register identifies interrupt source
- Output drive strength: four programmable drive strength levels to reduce rise and fall times in low-capacitance applications
- Input latch: changes in input port register values are held until the input port register is read
- Pull-up/pull-down enable: enables floating input or pull-up/pull-down resistors
- Pull-up/pull-down selection: 100kΩ pull-up/pull-down resistor selection
- Interrupt mask: masking prevents interrupts on input state changes to avoid spurious interrupts
