Introduction
The TPS54623, available in a thermally enhanced VQFN package, is a fully featured 17V 6A synchronous buck converter with high efficiency and integrated high-side and low-side MOSFETs, optimized for compact designs. Current mode control reduces component count, and selecting a higher switching frequency allows a smaller inductor to further save board space. The output voltage startup ramp is controlled by the SS/TR pin, which supports both standalone power supply operation and tracking mode. In addition, proper configuration of the enable and open-drain power-good pins enables power sequencing. Cycle-by-cycle current limiting on the high-side FET protects the device under overload conditions, while a low-side source current limit prevents current runaway for enhanced protection. A low-side sink current limit is also provided, which can turn off the low-side MOSFET to prevent excessive reverse current. When an overcurrent condition persists beyond a preset duration, hiccup protection is triggered. When the die temperature exceeds the thermal shutdown threshold, the thermal hiccup protection feature disables the device and re-enables it after the built-in thermal shutdown hiccup interval. The TPS54623 operates in continuous conduction mode (CCM) under higher load conditions and improves light-load efficiency by pulse skipping.
