The AM29C60A Error Detection and Correction (EDC) unit contains the necessary logic to generate check bits over a 16-bit data field based on a modified Hamming code, and to correct data words when check bits are provided. When operating on data read from memory, the AM29C60A can correct any single-bit error and detect all double-bit and some triple-bit errors. For a 16-bit word, 6 check bits are used. The AM29C60A is expandable to handle 32-bit words (7 check bits) and 64-bit words (8 check bits). In all configurations, the device provides error syndromes on separate outputs for data logging. In addition, the AM29C60A features two diagnostic modes that force diagnostic data into sections of the chip to simplify device testing and perform system diagnostic functions.
