Introduction
IPS2550 is a magnet-free, inductive position sensor IC designed for high-speed position sensing in automotive, industrial, medical, and consumer applications. IPS2550 uses the physical principle of eddy currents to detect the position of a simple metal target moving over a coil set consisting of one transmit coil and two receive coils. The three coils are typically printed as copper traces on a PCB. They are arranged so that the transmit coil induces secondary voltages in the two receive coils, depending on the position of the metal target above the coils. By demodulating and processing the secondary voltages from the receive coils, a signal representing the position of the target above the coils is obtained. The target can be any type of metal, such as aluminum, steel, or a PCB with a printed copper layer. IPS2550 provides two independent output interfaces: a high-speed analog interface that delivers position information as demodulated analog sine or cosine raw data, and an I2C digital interface for diagnostics and programming. IPS2550 operates at speeds up to 600,000 RPM, suitable for coil designs using 1 cycle per revolution. An ultra-low propagation delay of 4 microseconds enables high dynamic control of fast-rotating motors. IPS2550 is developed in accordance with ISO 26262 for use in safety-related systems up to ASIL C. It can also be used for ASIL D system-level requirements based on ASIL decomposition rules or appropriate risk analysis performed by the system integrator. IPS2550 is housed in a 16-pin exposed-pad TSSOP package, rated for automotive use over an ambient temperature range of -40°C to +160°C.
