This RS-485/RS-422 device features ESD protection and operates from a 5V supply, functioning as a single receiver/driver compliant with RS-485 and RS-422 balanced communication standards. Each driver output/receiver input is protected against ±5kV ESD without latch-up. Unlike competing devices, this family is fully specified over a 10% tolerance supply (4.5V to 5.5V). The ISL8485E, with its higher slew rate, supports data rates up to 6Mbps. Both devices present a "single unit load" on the RS-485 bus, allowing up to 32 transceivers on the network. The receiver inputs feature a "fail-safe open" design, ensuring a logic-high output when the receiver inputs are left floating. Driver outputs are protected against overvoltage conditions, even when the voltage exceeds the supply voltage. An on-chip thermal shutdown circuit disables the driver outputs to prevent damage under excessive power dissipation. These half-duplex configurations share receiver inputs and driver outputs, enabling a transceiver with receiver and driver disable functionality in an 8-pin package.
