Thermistors change resistance with temperature; they do not amplify, rectify, polarize, or generate signals. A thermistor's temperature can be altered by the surrounding environment or by self-heating through applied current. Most applications — such as temperature measurement and control or copper coil compensation — require minimizing thermistor power dissipation to prevent significant self-heating. Other applications, however, rely entirely on the self-heating effect. When the ambient temperature is fixed, a thermistor's resistance depends largely on its internal power dissipation, which raises its temperature above the ambient level. Under these operating conditions, the temperature may rise 100°C to 200°C (121°F to 392°F), and at low current, resistance may drop to as low as 1/1000 of its original value. Glass Encapsulated Chip (GEC) thermistors are high-quality, hermetically sealed glass encapsulated chip thermistors in axial lead packages, rated for -60°C to 300°C (-76°F to 572°F), suitable for many reliability-critical, cost-effective applications. Epoxy-coated or uncoated chip thermistors are available in a wide range of custom resistance values and R/T curves, with both uninsulated and insulated lead options. UNI-CURVE interchangeable thermistor temperature matching reduces costs, eliminates individual resistance-temperature calibration, enables standardization of circuit components, and simplifies design and replacement. Disc thermistors are available uncoated or epoxy-coated, in a wide range of custom resistance values and R/T curves, with uninsulated leads only, suitable for low-cost applications up to 150°C (302°F), PC board mounting, and tape-and-reel packaging.
