Introduction
The TRF7962A is an integrated analog front end (AFE) and data framing device for 13.56 MHz RFID read/write systems, supporting ISO/IEC 15693. Built-in programmable options make it suitable for a wide range of proximity and vicinity identification system applications. The reader can be configured by selecting the desired protocol in the control registers. Direct access to all control registers allows fine-tuning of various reader parameters as needed. The TRF7962A handles all framing and synchronization tasks for on-board ISO protocols, supporting data rates of 6 kbps and 26 kbps. The device also supports NFC Forum Tag Type 5 read/write mode. To support NFC Forum Tag Type 5, the device allows use of the built-in protocol decoder in Direct Mode 2. NFC Forum Tag Type 1 requires Direct Mode 0. Other standard and custom protocols can also be implemented using Direct Mode 0. Direct Mode 0 gives the user full control of the AFE and provides access to raw subcarrier data or unframed but ISO-formatted data along with the associated (extracted) clock signal. The receiver system features a dual-input receiver architecture for maximum communication reliability. The receivers include multiple automatic and manual gain control options. Signal strength received from transponders, ambient signal sources, or internal levels is available in the RSSI register. Communication between the MCU and the TRF7962A reader supports either SPI or parallel interface. When using the built-in hardware encoder and decoder, transmit and receive functions utilize a 12-byte FIFO register. For direct transmit or receive operation, the encoder or decoder can be bypassed, allowing the MCU to process data in real time. The TRF7962A supports a wide supply voltage range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V and data communication levels of 1.8 V to 5.5 V for the MCU I/O interface. When operating from a 5 V supply, the transmitter offers selectable output power levels of 100 mW (+20 dBm) or 200 mW (+23 dBm) equivalent into a 50 Ω load, with support for OOK and ASK modulation at selectable modulation depths. The built-in programmable auxiliary regulator provides up to 20 mA of power for the MCU and other external circuitry in the reader system.
