The TL16C754B is a quad-channel universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) with 64-byte FIFOs, automatic hardware/software flow control, and data transfer rates up to 3 Mbps. The TL16C754B provides enhanced functionality. It has a Transmission Control Register (TCR) that stores receive FIFO trigger levels for initiating/halting transmission during hardware and software flow control. Through the FIFO RDY register, software can retrieve the TXRDY/RXRDY status of all four ports in a single access. On-chip status registers provide users with error indication, operational status, and modem interface control. System interrupts can be customized to user requirements. An internal loopback capability allows on-board diagnostics.

The UART transmits data received from the peripheral 8-bit bus via the TX signal and receives characters via the RX signal. Characters are programmable as 5, 6, 7, or 8 bits. The UART features 64-byte receive and transmit FIFOs, programmable to interrupt at different trigger levels. The UART generates the required baud rate based on a programmable divisor and input clock. It can transmit even parity, odd parity, or no parity, and can transmit 1, 1.5, or 2 stop bits. The receiver can detect break, idle or framing errors, FIFO overflow, and parity errors. The transmitter can detect FIFO underflow. The UART also includes a software interface for modem control operations, along with software and hardware flow control capabilities.

The TL16C754B is available in an 80-pin TQFP and a 68-pin PLCC package.
