Introduction
The ATA8350 is a highly integrated, low-power IR-UWB transceiver with an integrated security layer for secure ranging and data communication between two devices. The ATA8350 all-digital transmit circuit ensures high flexibility in generating UWB pulse signals. The transmitter is capable of precisely generating pulse durations from less than 1 ns to over 10 ns, with controlled envelope shape and carrier frequency ranging from approximately 6.2 GHz to 7.8 GHz. Transmit output power is programmable up to -7 dBm, ensuring compliance with ETSI and FCC regulations for all applications. The ATA8350 receiver distinguishes itself with a high-gain, low-power wideband analog RF front-end and a high-speed, low-power digital baseband processor. The receive path includes a frequency down-conversion circuit consisting of a low-noise amplifier (LNA) and mixer, a digitally controlled variable gain amplifier (VGA) with digital automatic gain control (AGC), analog-to-digital conversion, and a digital baseband signal processing unit for highly stable sub-nanosecond time-of-arrival (ToA) estimation. The system incorporates a formally verified dedicated MAC layer for secure ranging and data communication used in proximity-based access control. This layer is configurable to ensure different levels of security while providing a sufficient number of ranging measurements to operate within a single secure access control session. This improves ranging accuracy by averaging measurements. The secure ranging layer is designed to resist application-layer and physical-layer distance modification attacks. It can operate with any microcontroller capable of providing cryptographically secure random number generation and authentication routines.
