KEMET's COG dielectric Flexible Termination (FT-CAP) multilayer ceramic capacitors feature a unique flexible termination system integrated with KEMET's standard termination materials. Conductive silver epoxy is used between the base metal and nickel barrier layers of KEMET's standard termination system to achieve flexibility while maintaining terminal strength, solderability, and electrical performance. This technology was developed to address the primary failure mode of MLCCs — flex cracking — typically caused by excessive tensile and shear stresses generated during board flexing and thermal cycling. The flexible termination technology suppresses the transfer of board stress to the rigid ceramic body, reducing flex cracks that can lead to low insulation resistance or short-circuit failures.

While this technology cannot eliminate mechanical damage that may occur under extreme environmental and operating conditions, it offers superior flex performance compared to standard termination systems. The FT-CAP complements KEMET's open-mode, Floating Electrode (FE-CAP), Floating Electrode with Flexible Termination (FF-CAP), and KEMET Power Solutions (KPS) product lines by providing a complete suite of flex mitigation solutions.

Combined with the stability of COG dielectric, these flex-resistant devices are designed to meet all capacitance requirements, are RoHS compliant, offer up to 5mm flex capability, and exhibit no capacitance change over time or with voltage. Over an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C, capacitance change with temperature is limited to ±30ppm/°C.

In addition to commercial-grade products, automotive-grade devices qualified to the stringent AEC-Q200 requirements of the Automotive Electronics Council are also available.

Typical applications include critical timing, tuning, low-loss circuits, pulse and high-current circuits, decoupling, bypassing, filtering, transient voltage suppression and blocking, as well as energy storage in critical and safety-related circuits without (integrated) current limiting — including those subject to high levels of board flex or temperature cycling.
