Introduction
Gas discharge tubes normally remain in a high-insulation-resistance state, essentially equivalent to an open circuit, with virtually no effect on normal circuit operation. When a transient overvoltage occurs in the circuit and its amplitude exceeds the breakdown voltage within the gas discharge tube, the gas inside is ionized, causing the tube to conduct rapidly and clamp the overvoltage to a lower level, thereby protecting parallel-connected electronic equipment or circuit components from damage due to high-voltage surges.
