Introduction
The LTC4120 is a constant-current/constant-voltage wireless receiver and battery charger. An external programming resistor sets the charge current up to 400mA. The LTC4120-4.2 is designed for charging Li-Ion/Li-Polymer batteries, while the LTC4120's programmable float voltage accommodates a wide variety of battery chemistries. The LTC4120 employs a Dynamic Harmonization Control (DHC) method to achieve high-efficiency contactless charging across an air gap. The LTC4120 regulates its input voltage via the DHC pin. This approach modulates the resonant frequency of a receiver oscillator circuit to automatically adjust received and transmitted power, providing a highly efficient solution for wireless charging of battery-powered devices. Wireless charging with the LTC4120 offers a means of powering devices in harsh environments without the need for costly, failure-prone connectors. This enables products using the LTC4120 to be charged while sealed inside enclosures, installed in moving or rotating equipment, or used in applications where cleanliness or hygiene is a priority. This full-featured battery charger includes accurate RUN pin threshold, low-voltage battery preconditioning and bad battery fault detection, timer-based charge termination, automatic recharge, and NTC-qualified temperature charging. The FAULT pin provides indication of a bad battery or temperature fault. Once charging is terminated, the LTC4120 signals end-of-charge via the CHRG pin and enters a low-current sleep mode. If the battery voltage drops by 2.2%, an automatic restart function initiates a new charge cycle.
