Introduction
Bourns now offers a surface mount three-electrode gas discharge tube (GDT) surge protection device. This new surface mount version continues the high quality and superior characteristics of the Bourns miniature 2036 TRIGARD series GDTs, compatible with pick-and-place manufacturing processes. The device is ideal for board-level protection in high-bandwidth applications such as xDSL, cable broadband, and high-speed Ethernet. It features high energy handling capability, long-term stable performance, low capacitance of less than 2 pF, and a diameter of only 5 mm. Bourns GDTs are designed to prevent damage from transient disturbances by acting as a "crowbar," creating a short circuit to ground during conduction. When a voltage transient surge exceeds the specified breakdown voltage level of the GDT, the device ionizes and begins conducting within microseconds. Once the surge has passed and the system voltage returns to normal levels, the GDT reverts to its high-impedance state.
