The TPS65981 is a highly integrated, standalone USB Type-C and Power Delivery (PD) controller optimized for notebook applications. The TPS65981 integrates a fully managed power path with robust protection features to provide a complete USB-C PD solution. The TPS65981 integrates a high-speed multiplexer that depends on the USB Type-C cable orientation provided by the CC pins. The multiplexer passes the Sideband Use data for alternate modes. The TPS65981 comes in a QFN package for reliable manufacturing (with a 0.5mm pitch and compatible with 2-layer PCBs) and has an extended (industrial) temperature range. The TPS65981 is certified to USB PD 2.0 and is no longer eligible for USB IF certification. The port power switch can provide up to 3A of downstream current for both legacy USB power and Type-C USB power at 5V. When the USB PD power is used as a power source device (host), a power sink device (device), or a power source-sink device, an additional bidirectional switch path can provide up to 3A of current at up to 20V. Additionally, the TPS65981 device can also be used as an upstream-facing port (UFP), a downstream-facing port (DFP), or a dual-role data port. The port data multiplexer enables USB 2.0 HS data transfer between the port and the top or bottom D+/D– signal pairs and has a USB 2.0 low-speed endpoint. Additionally, the Sideband Use (SBU) signal pairs can be used for auxiliary or alternate mode communication (e.g., DisplayPort). The power management circuit is powered by the internal 3.3V voltage of the system, while using VBUS to start up and negotiate power for battery-depleted or battery-less scenarios.
