Introduction
The MG78L05 is a three-terminal integrated voltage regulator with a fixed 5V output, suitable for a wide range of applications. Its excellent internal current limiting and thermal shutdown features make it particularly well-suited for handling overload conditions. When used as a replacement for conventional Zener diode-resistor combinations, it effectively improves output impedance while significantly reducing quiescent current. With adequate heat dissipation, the device can deliver 120mA output current. The built-in current limiting function constrains peak output current within a safe range and provides safe operating area protection for the output transistor to limit internal power dissipation. Should internal power dissipation exceed the capacity of the heatsink, the thermal shutdown circuit prevents the IC from overheating.
