ISL9238 is a buck-boost narrow output DC voltage battery charger. The device provides NVDC charging, system bus regulation, and protection for tablets, ultrabooks, notebooks, power banks, and any USB-C interface platform. Advanced R3 technology delivers high light-load efficiency and fast transient response. In charging mode, the ISL9238 draws input power from a wide range of DC sources — such as conventional AC/DC charger adapters, USB PD ports, and travel adapters — and safely charges lithium-ion battery packs of up to 4 cells in series. As an NVDC topology charger, it also regulates the system output voltage to a narrow DC range to provide a stable system bus voltage. System power can be supplied by the adapter, the battery, or both simultaneously. The ISL9238 operates with battery only, adapter only, or both connected. For systems compliant with the Intel IMVP8 standard, the ISL9238 includes a system power monitor function that provides an analog signal representing total platform power consumption. The PSYS output can be connected to various IMVP8 core regulators to provide IMVP8-compliant power domain functionality. The ISL9238 supports reverse buck, boost, or buck-boost operation from 2 to 4 cells to the input port. The ISL9238 features serial communication via SMBus/I²C, allowing many critical parameters to be programmed for customized solutions.
