The 8253 is a programmable interval timer/counter designed specifically for Intel microcomputer systems. It functions as a general-purpose multi-timing element and can be treated as an array of I/O ports in system software. The 8253 solves one of the most common problems in any microcomputer system: generating precise time delays under software control. A programmer can configure the 8253 to meet specific requirements, initialize one of its counters, and the 8253 will then count out the delay and interrupt the CPU upon completion. In addition, the 8253 supports other counter/timer functions common to most microcomputers that are not delay-related in nature, such as programmable rate generator, event counter, binary rate multiplier, real-time clock, digital one-shot, and complex motor controller.
