The Intel 82530 Serial Communications Controller is a dual-channel, multi-protocol data communications peripheral. It is designed to interface high-speed communication lines using asynchronous, byte-synchronous, and bit-synchronous protocols to Intel microprocessor-based systems. The device operates in polled, interrupt-driven, or DMA-driven modes, interfacing with Intel's MCS-51/96, iAPX 86/88/186, and 188 series microprocessors. The controller functions as a serial-to-parallel/parallel-to-serial converter/controller, software-configurable to meet a wide range of serial communications applications. It integrates sophisticated on-chip functions — including a baud rate generator, digital phase-locked loop, multiple data encoding/decoding schemes, and a crystal oscillator — reducing the need for external logic. In addition, its diagnostic capabilities (auto-echo and local loopback) enable users to detect and isolate network faults, significantly enhancing system reliability and fault isolation.

- Compatible with any Intel CPU, DMA, or I/O processor
- Available in 40-pin DIP and 44-pin PLCC packages
- Express version available
- Asynchronous mode: 5–8 bit characters; odd, even, or no parity; 1, 1.5, or 2 stop bits; independent transmit and receive clocks; 1X, 16X, 32X, or 64X programmable clock factor; error detection: framing, overrun, and parity errors; break detection and generation
- Bit-synchronous mode: SDLC loop/non-loop operation; CRC-16 or CCITT generation and detection; abort generation and detection; I-field residue handling; CCITT X.25 compatible
- Byte-synchronous mode: internal or external character sync (1 or 2 characters); automatic CRC generation and checking (CRC-16 or CCITT); IBM bisync compatible
