The bq24140 is a compact, flexible, highly efficient, USB-friendly switch-mode charge management device for single-cell Li-Ion and Li-Polymer batteries used in a wide range of portable applications. Charge parameters are programmable via the I²C interface. This IC integrates two synchronous PWM controllers, power MOSFETs, input current sensing, high-accuracy current and voltage regulation, and charge termination functions into a small WCSP package.

Battery charging occurs in three phases: conditioning, constant current, and constant voltage. Input current is automatically limited by the host. Charging terminates when a user-selectable minimum current level is reached. A safety timer with reset control provides a safety backup for the I²C interface. Under normal operation, if the battery voltage drops below an internal threshold, the IC automatically restarts the charge cycle; when input power is removed, the IC automatically enters sleep mode or high-impedance mode. Charge status can be reported to the host via the I²C interface. During charging, the IC monitors its junction temperature (TJ) and reduces the charge current once TJ rises to a typical value of 125°C. To support USB OTG devices, the IC can boost the battery voltage to provide VBUS (typical 5.05V). This IC is available in a 30-pin WCSP package.
