Coupled Inductor Background

Coupling refers to the phenomenon in which the input and output of two or more circuit components affect each other. In the process, it transfers energy from one end to the other. When a coil passes through an alternating current, it generates an induced magnetic field around the coil. If the two coils interact with each other, they are said to be magnetically coupled. Two or more coils with magnetic coupling are called coupling coils, that is, the coupled inductors.

The common circuit topology for coupled inductors is the SEPIC (Single-Ended Primary Inductance Converter) topology. SEPIC is a type of converter that features a single primary inductor. The greatest advantage of this topology is that it has input and output voltages of the same polarity, making it suitable for battery-powered applications such as LED lighting. In a SEPIC circuit, we often use the coupled inductor to fulfill the circuit functions. Compared to two separate inductors, a coupled inductor reduces the number of components, increases integration, improves efficiency, and provides better loop control characteristics and fewer EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) challenges.

Coupled Inductor Product Characteristics

Cjiang automotive grade coupled inductor products have the following features: high efficiency, strong coupling, and low DCR for reliable power handling. They are RoHS compliant and AEC-Q200 qualified for environmental and automotive reliability standards.

High Efficiency and Strong Coupling

Coupled inductor products attain high efficiency and strong coupling. So, the coupled inductor can minimize energy loss during operation and enhance the overall performance. Strong coupling ensures that the magnetic fields of the individual inductors are effectively linked, leading to a more stable and efficient energy transfer.

High Rated Current and Low DCR

One of the key features of coupled inductor products is their ability to handle high rated current. This capability is crucial for applications that require a significant amount of power consistently. Additionally, these inductors have a low DC resistance (DCR), which means that they experience minimal power loss as current flows through them. This contributes to the overall efficiency and longevity of the device.

Compliance with RoHS

Coupled inductor products are in full compliance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive. This European Union directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products. Compliance with RoHS ensures that the products are environmentally friendly and safe for use, meeting international standards for the reduction of hazardous substances in electronic components.

High Reliability and AEC-Q200 Certification

Reliability is a paramount concern in the design of coupled inductor products. This set of stress test guidelines is specifically tailored for the automotive industry and ensures that electronic components, including coupled inductors, can withstand the harsh conditions typically encountered in automotive environments. Meeting the AEC-Q200 standards signifies that the coupled inductors are of high quality and are reliable enough for use in critical automotive applications.

Coupled Inductor Application

Coupled inductors are vital in automotive SEPIC and Zeta circuits, as well as in flyback topologies and LED lighting, providing efficient power supply and serving roles as common mode filters and transformers.
