Introduction
The MLS sensor is an AMR gradient sensor based on the anisotropic magnetoresistance effect, designed to detect magnetic gradient fields while remaining largely insensitive to uniform stray magnetic fields. As the sensor slides along the magnetic scale, it generates sinusoidal and cosinusoidal output signals corresponding to position. Satisfactory results can be obtained as long as the air gap between the sensor edge and the magnetic scale surface does not exceed approximately half the pole pitch. Since the signal amplitude is nearly independent of magnetic field strength, variations in air gap have minimal impact on accuracy. Precise displacement values can be obtained using a sine/cosine decoder. The achievable maximum accuracy depends on the magnetic scale precision and the distance between the sensor and the magnetic scale, typically reaching an accuracy level of less than 1% of the pole pitch.
